It's not Big Pharma, but it is clever

27 Jul 2015

Only a decade or so ago, employment for doctoral research chemists in the biomedical sector was dominated by Big Pharma. Today this is no longer the case, with Small and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs), Contract Research Organisations (CROs), and charity funded organisations (a.k.a. the '3rd Sector) employing a significant and rising number of chemists in the UK.

Being confronted by the changing face, the sector can be daunting. Perhaps you are a PhD student or Postdoc considering a career in bio-medical research, wondering what options are open to you; maybe you would like to know what the culture of industrial research is really like, through the eyes of those who work within it?

If this describes you, then we are pleased to inform you that SCI and the Royal Society of Chemistry have come together once again to organise an event with you in mind, dealing with the Who, What, Where, and How of those three little words that every chemist longs to hear - 'You are hired! '

The event will bring together research and management staff from various organisations within these different sectors to present the range of opportunities available; particular attention will be paid to the pros and cons of working within a small organisation as opposed to a large one. The discussion will also include the attributes they look for in potential employees.

Highlights of the day's agenda include case studies from researchers within an SME, a CRO, and a 3rd sector organisation, as well as a discussion of on-going professional development and the sources of support for keeping one's knowledge up to date.

The day is aimed at PhD students and Postdocs interested in bio-medical research, and scientists from SMEs and CROs engaged in the field.

Alongside the event, there will be an exhibition featuring relevant companies, including those which have current or future vacancies. After the presentations, there will be ample opportunity for attendees to meet the speakers in an informal setting, as well as to network representatives from relevant recruiting organisations.

'You're Hired!' - Careers for Chemists in New Company, Contract and Charity sectors will take place on Wednesday 4 November 2015 at the Biopark, Welwyn Garden City. The event is free to attend, but places are limited and are likely to fill up fast - please register your interest by emailing conferences@soci.org.
