Professor Dame Sally Davies has been awarded an Honorary Membership of SCI for her services to science and industry. Dame Sally was the 16th recipient of the Lister Medal, which was founded in 1944, and previously gave a Public Evening Lecture in 2014. Throughout her career, she has written and spoken extensively about the rise of antimicrobial resistance in medicine and agriculture and worked to strengthen the links between clinical medicine and research, which lead to the successful establishment of the National Institute for Health Research.

She is currently the Chief Medical Officer for England and Chief Scientific Adviser to the Department of Health. She also chairs the UK Clinical Research Collaboration, and is a member of:

  • the board of the Office for Strategic Co-ordination of Health Research and the Medical Research Council
  • the World Health Organization (WHO) Global Advisory Committee on Health Research
  • the International Advisory Committee for A*STAR, Singapore
  • the Caribbean Health Research Council

Dame Sally has a background in research and has focused on patients and evidence in her approach to health-related policy making, including establishing the National Institute for Health Research in 2006 to improve the NHS’s approach to clinical and applied research in the UK. She was awarded a DBE for services to medicine in 2009.

SCI welcomes Dame Sally into our membership and looks forward to working with her to build SCI’s position in Medicinal Chemistry.
