Introducing SCI Ambassador, Anam Safri

Anam Safri

“I hope to get involved in the activities and events conducted by SCI and contribute to bridge gaps between people from interdisciplinary fields by encouraging and spreading the word in order to grow networks.”

What are your research interests?
My research focuses on the application of Solar disinfection of water with the aid of nanocomposites. The idea is to exploit the synergistic effect of carbon-based materials and semiconductor nanoparticles immobilised in the polymer matrix to eradicate the bacterial contaminants from contaminated water. Besides, I am also working on the hydrogel based nanohybrids as disinfectants. Presently, I am entering the second year of my PhD.

How did you first get involved with SCI?
SCI offers extensive opportunities for researchers, which are not limited to showcasing their researches, but also provide scholarships and platforms to construct network beyond academia. During my first year of PhD, I was recommended by my supervisor to present my research in a conference that was jointly organised by the SCI Electrochemical Technology Group where I won the main award of the conference, the SCI ECTG Enterprise Award, which gave me an SCI membership. After learning of the opportunities available through the society website, I was intrigued to get involved in the activities as an ambassador.

SCI aims to be 'where science meets business'. What is the potential commercial application of your research?
Water remediation; the ultimate hybrids as invention of my research could potentially be practicable to treat ground water especially in the developing countries, whereby utilizing only the natural light for activation of the system.

What do you hope to gain from your involvement with SCI?
As an SCI ambassador, I hope to get involved in the activities/events conducted by SCI and contribute to bridge gaps between people from interdisciplinary fields by encouraging and spreading the word in order to grow networks. Also, make people aware of the opportunities SCI provides, to strengthen the connection between science and business, as SCI aims.
