Lecture
Petra Cox is the Learning and Outreach Officer for the Crossness Engines Trust, a volunteer-led organisation managing the restoration of the Crossness Pumping Station. Completed in 1865 by civil engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, Crossness is part of the first sewer system built across Victorian London and his network of sewers still form the backbone of the system we use today.
Originally engaged by the Trust as part of a Heritage Lottery funded project, Petra has worked at Crossness for over 3 years developing educational programmes and events to increase visitors’ engagement with this magnificent grade 1 listed, industrial heritage site.
Petra works with local schools, families, universities, specialist and community groups and provides talks, tours and hands-on workshops exploring the design, technology and historical significance of the pumping station and its role within Bazalgette’s wider system.
The talk will outline the story of the Crossness past, present and future including the on-going restoration work by the Crossness Engines Trust.
