This SCI member event is aimed at undergraduates and PhD students who are looking to build skills for their future career. SCI membership offers a host of opportunities to develop interpersonal, professional and technical competencies. This event will allow delegates to learn from the experience of others, and to take part in practical exercises and activities to strengthen their CV.

11.15 Welcome and SCI College of Scholars Update
College of Scholars Principal, Prof Alan Heaton, will give an overview of college activities, who are members, our current and future initiatives and developments.

11.30 Current scholar – my work and personal development with support from SCI
One of our current cadre of scholars will talk about their work, the support provided through the SCI scholarship and how this has helped their studies.
11.50 Past Scholar – what happened next
A college alumnus will describe their career post-Scholarship and how the college and SCI membership has helped in their career choices and development.
12.10 SCI Royal Society Studentships
A Studentship recipient will describe their work under this SCI partnership with the Royal Society that complements the Royal Society Industry Fellowship Scheme, funding academics to work in industry or people from industry to work in academic institutions for specific innovation projects.
12.30 Daphne Jackson Fellowship
Daphne Jackson Fellowships are dedicated to helping return scientists, engineers and technologists to their careers, following a break. A current fellow will describe how their career has been supported by this important initiative.
12.50 Global networking - SCI Travel Bursaries
What did travel bursaries ever do for us? Lots! We hear from four recent SCI travel bursary beneficiaries about where they went around the world and what they did thanks to this SCI funding.
13.30 Lunch
  Session 2: Ramsay Fellowships – Introduction by Alan Heaton. Session chair: David Philips
14.15 Ramsay Trust Memorial Fellowships
Prof David Philips will introduce these prestigious fellowships and then two current Ramsay Fellows will describe their research with time for questions. This SCI administered initiative provides funding for early career postdoctoral studies that can boost international reputations!

  Session 3: Careers, Mentoring and SCIdea Challenge update
15.45 Bright SCIdea Challenge – what next?
An update on this SCI initiative for budding research entrepreneurs! Who won in 2019 and what’s next!
15.55 What is Industry looking for?
An industry representative will talk about what they need in terms of their graduate and postgraduate workforce and how this differs from academia.
16.15 Mentoring case study
The SCI run a successful mentoring scheme through the College of Scholars. A mentee will talk about their experience of the scheme and the benefits of getting involved.
16.30 CV Workshop
Need to polish that CV? Or looking for advice on how to make your resume stand out? This is the session for you.
16.55 Conclusion and summing up of the Day
