Meet our new Trustees - AGM 2016 Review

Dr Alan Baylis, Chair of the Board of Trustees, welcomed Members to the 135th SCI AGM on Wednesday 6 July 2016. Elections were held for ordinary Members of the Board of Trustees and the AGM also noted the unopposed election of various positions on SCI committees. We look forward to working with our new Trustees and Standing Committee Members to deliver our strategy and drive SCI forward.

The SCI 'Carbon in Industry' Award and Lecture 2016

This prestigious award has been established by the Society of Chemical Industry and it will be given for the sixth time in 2016. Nominations are now requested without the knowledge of the candidate and with a supporting 250 - 500 word citation. Deadline for nominations is 4pm BST on the 1 September 2016.

For over thirty years, SCI has supported and recognised the excellence of early career people, by aiding their studies in the form of an SCI Scholarship, which not only give the recipients financial assistance, but enable them to broaden their network and strengthen their skills and knowledge.

SCI is developing an exciting new benefit for SCI Members - the SCI Mentoring Programme - which is designed to match early career members with a mentor who will help them to address specific goals or issues in their career. This new initiative will be of real benefit to SCI Members - mentors and mentees alike - and will contribute to SCI’s strategic mission of supporting members’ careers through training, development and employment opportunities.

Since the news broke on Friday 23 June that the UK has voted to leave the EU, many people have been asking ‘what happens next?’ not least the UK’s science and business communities who have raised questions about whether they will continue to have the same access to EU funding and skilled employees from the EU in the future. SCI members represent a broad section of the scientific community and we were pleased to be able to invite several of our community to hear and contribute to the discussions at Parliamentary Links Day 2016, held on 28 June and organised by Stephen Benn, Director of Parliamentary Affairs at the Royal Society of Biology.

Public Evening Lecture - Sir Simon Campbell on Science Art and Drug Discovery, a personal perspective

On Tuesday 25 October 2016 SCI’s Evening Lecture looks into the science behind food regulation and the uncertainty of observations in biological science. The lecture, delivered by Sir Colin Berry, Emeritus Professor of Pathology, Queen Mary, University of London, will explore the quality and reproducibility of the science that underpins public health decision making and the subsequent perceived public health risks.

Organised by SCI’s partner organisation Royal Society of Biology on behalf of other scientific organisations, Parliamentary Links Day is the largest science event on the annual Parliamentary events calendar bringing together scientists, learned societies and Members of Parliament.
