Invitation to SCI’s Free Public Evening Lecture

Dr Alison Tedstone – Overcoming obesity: A taste of things to come

Wednesday 23 May 2018

  • In England, 58% of women and 68% of men are considered to be overweight or obese
  • Obesity has been linked to many serious diseases, including heart disease, diabetes and cancer
  • The UK government has launched a childhood obesity plan to reduce sugar in foods and encourage physical activity

To tackle the continuing obesity crisis in the UK, Public Health England has announced a series of recommendations, including a 20% reduction in sugar levels in the top nine food categories that contribute to children’s sugar intake. During her Public Evening Lecture, on 23 May 2018, Dr Alison Tedstone will discuss the evidence underpinning the UK government’s actions on sugary foods and the guidelines it has set for the food industry to fulfil this ambition.

About the speaker

Dr Tedstone is the Chief Nutritionist for Public Health England, a role in which she provides evidence to inform policy development and delivery of programmes to tackle the nations obesity problem and improve diet – from key deliverables of the government’s childhood obesity plan and supporting local weight management services to addressing the environmental triggers of obesity.

Having completed her BSc and PhD at London University, she undertook post-doctoral research in Oxford. She has previously worked in academia at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, as Head of Nutrition Science at the Food Standards Agency, and at the Department of Health. She is a founding fellow of the Association of Nutrition.
