Review of the BIGGER BANG SHOW with Dr Hal Sosabowski, 5 Nov 2009
Dr Hal Sosabowski and his support team gave us a tremendous performance last Thursday (5 Nov 2009). We almost filled the BMS Lecture Theatre (about 300?), even though the Cambridge city fireworks event was on at the same time.
Hal managed to be informal and entertaining, whilst not sacrificing the science education aspects. My favourite experiments were:
- floating an aluminium foil "boat" in a tank of sulphur hexafluoride vapour,
- the exploding ostrich egg, and
- the monster "barking dog" (nitrous oxide and carbon disulphide chemiluminescent bang!).
It was thoroughly enjoyable. The younger member of the audience really got involved. (It was hard to stop them asking questions after the lecture.)
