David Beckman Receives Distinguished Service Award
2 May 2013
Each year, at its AGM, SCI presents Distinguished Service Awards. The awards celebrate the hard work and goodwill of longer-serving members from all component parts of the Society. They recognise time given as volunteers to organise conferences, edit or peer-review the material published in our journals, share enthusiasm, or lend leadership and vision to sustain regional or technical group activities.
This year, the Society is pleased to present a Distinguished Service Award to Mr David Beckman for his long-standing contribution to the work of SCI Canada.
How did you become a member of the SCI?
Our company wanted to be involved with the SCI.
Why did you decide to get involved in committee work/organising events/collaborating in SCI publications?
The SCI committee in Canada did not have much participation and needed help, so I got involved.
What has driven your long-term involvement?
The awards event that we organise is a really good event and interesting to be a part of.
Has being involved in SCI activities had an impact on your professional career?
To some extent, more connections have been made. In addition, the connections between innovation in the SCI awards and my company Zeton, as a specialist in the design and fabrication of pilot and demonstration plants for process development, has had an impact on the development of Zeton.
Do your SCI activities reflect your personal/professional interests?
Yes as the awards event we organise mostly recognizes chemical innovation which is the area our business works in, and my area of interest.
Are you still excited to participate in SCI activities?
How do you think that your contribution has helped shaped SCI?
I have been involved with the merger between SCI Canada and the CIC as a way to deal with reducing membership in SCI Canada. By merging with the CIC in Canada we have been able to maintain the presence of SCI in Canada.
Are you excited about receiving a Distinguished Service Award?
Yes I am pleased to receive this award.
