2009 Distinguished Service Award for Colloid Group's Andrew Howe

Andrew Howe has represented the colloid community on the Colloid and Interface Science Committee for an extended period amounting in total to some 20 years, rising to the Chair of the group from 2003-2007. During this period, Andrew has personally organised and overseen the management of numerous very successful conferences.

Under his stewardship, especially as Chair, he must be credited with making the SCI Colloid group one of the more active in the world with an excellent dissemination of activity and pooling of expertise, equipment and knowledge. In addition Andrew has served SCI in his role as Trustee of the Rideal Trust for many years. He is on the Board of ECIS, the European Colloid and Interface Science Group and his presidential term will be 2009-11, and through his close working relationship with the colloid group is able to facilitate our activities on the European stage.

Andrew has worked as a colloid scientist in Kodak European Research Lab for almost 20 years, enjoying the application of good science to improve industrial products and processes. The networking opportunities provided by SCI have helped him to bridge the gap between the latest academic progress and the immediate production problem or to stimulate a new product opportunity.

Andrew is very grateful to SCI for the leadership opportunities it has provided and to the staff at SCI HQ for consistent support over all those years. As a consequence of the ‘credit crunch’, Andrew has just been provided with an exciting new opportunity for change in the coming months. Andrew expects that the networks and skills he developed during his service to SCI will be helpful in securing rewarding new employment.
