SCI has named Jeffrey M Lipton, Chief Executive Officer of NOVA Chemicals, to receive the 2009 Chemical Industry Medal.

The Chemical Industry Medal honours an individual whose leadership, commitment and contributions have been responsible for substantial progress and performance in the chemical industry.

Lipton has been the CEO of NOVA Chemicals since its start up in 1998. Previously, he was President and Chief Operating Officer of NOVA Chemicals’ predecessor, NOVA Corporation. Prior to joining NOVA Corporation, Jeff worked for EI DuPont for almost three decades.

Lipton has been an advocate for sharing information and best practices in Responsible Care® while encouraging the entire chemical industry to continuously improve process safety performance. His active participation in industry associations as a past Chairman of the Board of the American Chemistry Council and a past Chairman of the Board of SCI, America International Group has helped build confidence and trust with our industry’s stakeholders.

Lipton is a Director of the Board of the American Chemistry Council, the Canadian Council of Chief Executives and United States Steel Corporation. He is a past director of Hercules Inc.

Recently, Lipton has been honoured with the 2008 Tree of Life award, presented by the Jewish National Fund for notable community involvement, and the 2007 International Palladium Medal, presented by SCI, America International Group, for outstanding contributions to the world’s chemical industry.

A native of New York City, Lipton earned his MBA from Harvard University and his BS in Chemical Engineering from the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. (read more)

About the Chemical Industry Medal
The Chemical Industry Medal, established in 1933, replaced the coveted Grasselli Medal, which had been sponsored by the Grasselli Chemical Company and awarded by SCI America for more than a decade. Presentation of the Chemical Industry Medal is made annually to a recipient selected by the Executive Committee of the America International Group of the SCI. The Chemical Industry Medal is a testimonial to men and women whose leadership, foresight and contributions to applied chemistry have been, to a considerable degree, responsible for the growth of that industry. The medal has attained distinction be reason of the outstanding achievements and calibre of those who have been honoured.
