US private company Colossal Biosciences says it has hatched the first chicks from its artificial egg system. It describes the breakthrough as a significant step towards its goal of resurrecting extinct bird species, including the dodo.

Researchers in Switzerland have knocked down a dangerous strain of Escherichia coli that can infect newborns. This is the K1 form of the E. coli bacterium, which is part of the gut microbiota of healthy adults but which can move from mothers to infants during birth and cause potentially fatal blood poisoning or meningitis.
