Introducing SCI Ambassador, Sisir Barik

Sisir Barik

“SCI has supported and provided a platform for excellence to early career people by aiding their studies in the form of SCI Scholarships and travel awards.”

What are your research interests?
Human Nutrition and Biotechnology: Diet and nutrition in Type-2 diabetes

How did you first get involved with SCI?
I won the SCI Scotland Group PhD Student Competition in 2016, which inspired me to do better in my research field of interest and led me to get involved in SCI where I can utilize my knowledge and skills for the advancement of the society. Moreover, attaining an SCI membership is a prestigious accolade for the scholars of the scientific community of which I am privileged and proud of.

What do you hope to gain from your involvement with SCI?
It will give me a variety of benefits in my research interest which eventually enhances the quality of my CV including access to a multi-disciplinary network and many other facilities like professional development by gaining access to peer-reviewed journals. The network will assist in meeting experts, potential employers and to build business contacts. I can seek travel awards through SCI to attend conferences and can bring my science to an application based Technology Business Incubator for the benefit of mankind and this is where “science can meet business” with ease.

Why would you encourage your peers to join SCI?
At SCI there will be always an opportunity for members to utilise these grants and being outstanding among others. Also, SCI has group activities for different studies/fields and getting involved in them will surely enhance the communication skills among a scientific community and help gain knowledge in related subjects. And of course, how can one forget about the ‘SCI science magazine’, which is a remarkable gift to the members of the society.
