Synopsis

The lecture will be delivered by Dr Carol Wagstaff of University of Reading, Leader of Crop Quality for Health theme in the Centre for Food Security.

The UK has been quoted as being "nine meals from anarchy", referring to the fact that we rely heavily on food imports and a transport infrastructure within the country to get food to where it is needed. Even with an operational distribution network the UK still has areas of food insecurity, where access to sufficient nutrition is lacking. Conversely, a large proportion of the population has access to 'over-nutrition' and suffers from the health problems associated with obesity. Both groups, and many others, fail to meet the five-a-day target for fruit and vegetable consumption; there is a need to increase UK production of nutrient-dense, flavourful, attractive produce that people want to eat. This talk will explore the options for increasing UK production of horticultural crops and whether this is the best route for improving UK food security.

This event is open to members and non-members.
