A meeting organised by SCI's Horticulture Group and the Professional Horticulture Group South West. Speakers include: Mike Pollock, Former Director of Rosewarne EHS and Head of Education at the RHS; Catherine Dawson, Technical Director at Melcourt Industries and Chris Trimmer, Nursery Manager at National Trust Plant Conservation Centre.

Talks: A perspective of growing media from pre-John Innes to University of California (UC) mixes and beyond Michael Pollock, Former Director of Rosewarne EHS and Head of Education at the RHS This talk will review the progression from soil based composts through the aims for uniformity achieved with John Innes mixtures to the peat and sand composts formulated by UC and then on to the advent of new formulations of non-peat mixtures. Growing media - a 21st century perspective Catherine Dawson, Technical Director - Melcourt Melcourt is the UK's leading supplier of mulches, growing media, play surfaces, soil improvers, equestrian surfaces,biofiltration media and more, based on bark, wood and other natural materials. This talk will cover the post peat debate and refer to commercial mixes currently available. Catherine has worked on growing media development since 1983. Plant conservation in the National Trust - the work of the Plant Conservation Centre and the growing media used Chris Trimmer, Nursery Manager- National Trust Plant Conservation Centre The Plant Conservation Centre propagates rare and historical plants for the National Trust gardens.
