Synopsis

As part of SCI’s activity in support of the Chemistry Council Strategy, we have brought together a cross-industry group to focus on how to make the chemicals that go into consumer products more sustainable. During a pre-lockdown workshop, at the beginning of this year, the task was broken into three areas.

1. Engagement & Strategy – How to get consumers and regulators to understand the drivers and limitations of the changes required and to communicate unified goals in this area.

2.New Chemistries – How to replace traditional feedstocks with more sustainable alternatives. To include identification of synthetic routes that are more energy and resource efficient, as well as   identification of additional selection criteria to minimise the environmental impact of the chemicals used in consumer products.

3.Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) – How to consistently measure the impact of those changes on the sustainability of those products.

Teams have been working in each of these three areas to define the challenges, the questions that need to be answered before such changes are implemented, and the resources necessary to implement them.

This workshop will present these ideas to a wider community and seek to validate their direction. Focus groups will be used to answer the key questions, which will help develop the proposals for how these necessary changes can be implemented.

Attendees

Attendance at this event is encouraged from scientists, engineers, and those working in sustainability across the length of the consumer products supply chain. This will include bulk chemical suppliers all the way through to consumer product retailers, as well as those in supporting research and regulatory institutions.

**Attendees will need to come to the meeting prepared to actively contribute to the discussions above, therefore SCI reserves the right to request additional information about a delegate’s experience in this landscape prior to confirming their place.
