Autonomous vehicles promise safer roads, yet measuring "safety" remains stubbornly elusive. This talk explores why safety resists binary judgment: it depends on operational boundaries, edge cases, and rare failure modes that no finite testing regime can fully capture, making an objective determination as much a design and governance challenge as a technical one. The talk discusses the public's imaginative pull toward absolute safety and how this expectation distorts policy, engineering, and public trust. Extending the discussion beyond vehicles, the talk will explore the broader "AI fallacy". The assumptions that more capable AI is automatically safer AI and that a one-time safety proof guarantees ongoing reliability. Drawing on real-world deployment cases, this talk will introduce a clearer framework for safety and its two key components: engineering safety and communicating safety.

Professor Siddartha Khastgir is the Head of Safe Autonomy at WMG, University of Warwick. With a research portfolio spanning over £18million, he leads several R&D projects with 100+ partners globally. His research focuses on AI safety and proving the safety of autonomous transport across aviation, road, and marine domains. He has been appointed as a member of the UK Govt’s Department for Transport’s Science Advisory Council, and the Centre for Connected and Autonomous Vehicles Expert Advisory Panel to provide guidance for Automated Vehicles Act secondary legislation.
Siddartha is the Director of Partners for Automated Vehicle Education United Kingdom (PAVE UK) which is the country’s first initiative to deliver inclusive and accurate public awareness and education programmes to enable the public's acceptance of Automated Vehicles. Siddartha represents the UK on various standardisation and regulatory committees, including ISO, SAE and United Nations (UNECE) serving as the lead author for four ISO standards. He has also received numerous national and international awards for his research contributions, including the prestigious UKRI Future Leaders Fellowship and a Forbes 30 Under 30 Europe list maker.
