David Kirkaldy's Testing and Experimenting Works in Southwark Street, London, opened in 1874, and houses Kirkaldy's unique Universal Testing Machine - the huge hydraulic powered machine he designed and built. It was where experiments took place on materials to determine their strength.

Manufacturers sent materials from all over the world to be tested. Components for the Skylon (1951 Exhibition) were tested here, accident analysis work inspected materials from the Tay Bridge Disaster and the Flight 781 De Havilland Comet crash. The Kirkaldy works activities were worldwide reaching from HMS Dauntless, via Eads Bridge in Mississipi, Hammersmith and Albert Bridges in London, all the way to the Sydney Harbour Bridge.

The museum presents the story of the family who ran the business for almost 100 years and of the wider development of materials testing with many unique testing machines used on display in the original building.
