Low Carbon Technologies for the UK Energy System

Synopsis

Affordable and sustainable energy is fundamental for the UK’s prosperity. Today’s energy generation and consumption depend on established technologies, but new technologies will be needed to achieve the target of an 80% reduction in CO₂ emissions by 2050 while keeping energy costs competitive.

SCI’s Energy Group is developing new perspectives on the energy trilemma by modelling alternative scenarios for the UK energy system which focus on optimal use of available and emerging technologies. The modelling work was conducted by Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) using its ESME energy model. The modelling outputs and conclusions will be used to provide an objective, evidence-based view on the role of science and innovation in the UK energy sector, which can be utilised in government consultations, and in turn inform regulatory and market incentives and investments.

The aim of this event is to discuss the results of Energy Group’s modelling programme in the context of opportunities for decarbonisation of UK power and heating. Speakers will discuss three key enablers of CO₂ reduction in the UK energy system: capture of CO₂ from Gas Turbines, strategies for Bioenergy, and Small Modular Reactors (SMRs).
