Book Your Place at the Microbiology Water Testing Open Day

The SCI Environment, Health and Safety Group will be holding a Microbiology Water Testing Open Day on 24 September. This will be an opportunity to talk with renowned specialists to discuss key issues in water testing and analysis. The day will feature presentations on some of the current key topics in water testing and provide opportunities for discussion.

SCI Travel Bursaries Foster Vital Networking and Career Opportunities for the Early Career Scientist


For several years SCI travel bursaries have enabled recipients to build experience and confidence through their poster and oral presentations whilst gaining an insight into a new country or culture. Through their attendance at conferences or site visits, they learn about new cutting-edge research, connect with eminent speakers and network with fellow scientists, engineers and students, thus increasing the opportunity for future research collaborations. The winners from the October 2014 SCI travel bursary application round (for travel between 1 January and 30 June 2015) have now attended their conferences and completed their site visits. Read on to discover where they went and what they got up to.

The quality of the talks was outstanding which made the job of the judges (Dr Joe Marshall from Charles River and Prof Chris Braddock from Imperial College) very difficult. Fahima Idiris (pictured top right) from Queen Mary University of London was chosen as the winner for her talk entitled ‘C-H Activation in Flow’.

The SCI Agrisciences Committee organised an afternoon visit in mid July to Rothamsted Research in Harpenden. The 18 attendees had a chance to see how the world’s oldest agricultural research station was adapting to meet future challenges facing crop producers.

The science of soft interfaces (lipid membranes, emulsions, particle-stabilized droplets etc) is rapidly moving into an era of predictive capability that allows the design and development of advanced materials to be based on secure scientific knowledge.

The postponed 'An Overview of Health Related Statistics in HSE & Are You above the WEL? Practical Statistics for Hygienists', which was due to take place on 8 July at SCI, will now take place on 30 September at SCI.

Review of 134th SCI AGM


The 134th SCI AGM was attended by 66 members. Following a vote, the AGM saw the election of Dr Alan Baylis and the new Chair of the Board of Trustees, as well as four Trustees. Members were also elected unopposed as Ordinary Members of the three Standing Committees. SCI Honorary President Paul Booth OBE was succeeded by Neil Carson.
