Meet the Committee

Chair's message

Welcome to the webpages of the Environment, Health and Safety Group (EHS). Since the subjects we cover are central to every activity carried out by the chemical and allied industries it is not surprising that we have one of the largest memberships of any group in the Society. It is an exciting time to be involved in Environmental Health & Safety, with emerging major issues like climate change and the impact of plastics, the development of the Circular Economy and global governance systems for the management of chemicals not to mention the challenges of BREXIT. The committee is always keen to welcome new members and if you are interested our contact details are at the bottom of the page.

The Environment, Health and Safety Group aims to provide a forum for discussion and sharing of information on issues relevant both to the chemical and related industries but also to public authorities, regulators, academics and other interested parties. The Group also aims to enhance professional awareness and promote the general aims of SCI.

Much of this is achieved through one-day national and multi-day international conferences and seminars organised by the volunteers who make up the Group committee. We regularly collaborate with other SCI Groups and external organisations with similar objectives including the British Occupational Hygiene Society, Institution of Chemical Engineers and Royal Society of Chemistry amongst others.

There continues to be much discussion in the public arena concerning occupational and consumer health and safety. We recognise that more dialogue with both colleagues in the industry, and the public is needed to further common understanding and help in the management of health and safety issues. Consequently, we also regularly hold evening meetings which are open to the public on the many health and safety issues that face us today.

Details of all upcoming meetings are posted on the Group's calendar of events - keep visiting regularly to receive the latest update which will also include information from our sister groups in the Agri-Food Hub.

A significant activity of the Group is active participation in British and International standards activities where several members represent the Society in the development of British and ISO/EN standards committees. This is a valuable activity that raises the profile of the Society and provides mutual benefits from organising meetings and seminars to contribute to public debate and to the introduction of new standards. Most of this activity has been in the areas of soil quality, water quality, sludge treatment and disposal and ISO/CEN environmental policy.

In addition, the Group interacts with regulatory bodies concerned with all aspects of the management of chemicals throughout their life cycle, an area of growing importance as the UK prepares to leave the European Union. We provide the SCI representation on the DEFRA Chemical Stakeholders Forum and its working groups.

We always welcome suggestions for new events/meetings/seminars from our members. In addition, we are always keen to meet group members who are interested in becoming active members of the committee. Committee membership provides opportunities to promote EHS matters, generates networking opportunities and provides useful experience to enhance your CV.

If you are interested in the Committees activities and/or have suggestions for future events please contact myself, at david.taylor@wca-consulting.com, our Honorary Secretary Alan Maries, at alan.maries@amstar.org.uk, or SCI's Committee Support at committeesupport@soci.org or by telephone at  +44(0) 20 7598 1513.
