Early Career Activities

SCI’s Early Career network is aimed at people in the early stages of their studies or research in university and industry. It is an ideal way to learn about the experiences of others who have embarked on a career path which you may be looking to follow. The network aims to provide insight on steps for career development by providing access to scientific and business knowledge, through people sharing their varied experiences at tailored events, workshops and through case studies.

The case studies showcase our early career scientists who have drawn on experiences to provide a glimpse of what to expect from a scientific career. Read on to find out what steps they took to propel them into their respective areas of work or study, and also how SCI membership could help you build on your scientific career.

The Food Group, as part of its stated aim to 'actively encourage university-level students to take up careers in food related subjects' has taken the subject of sponsorship of competitions to a new level, by not just awarding prizes and membership, but also by inviting the winners onto its organising committee.

The students benefit in several ways. Obviously it is a major positive on their CV, and they also get the opportunity to network with people in business, people from other universities/centres of research, and can take part, if they wish, in the organisation of events or committee related activities - also very positive to mention on a CV.

Previous Young Ambassadors have taken on responsibilities for electronic media and publicity.

The committee, and the Food Group as a whole, benefit through input from younger members who are actively researching, plus access to the universities they are studying at. It is important that we have a good cross-section of age, and geographical representation on the committee.

To become a Young Ambassador you have to be a winner in one of the competitions sponsored by the Food Group.  Past Ambassadors have come from the Young Scientist North competition run in conjunction with the IFST Northern Branch, and the Harry Nursten Flavour Symposium. Check the Food Group events pages for details of future competitions, which usually take place annually in the Spring.

In 2016 the Agrisciences and Food Groups set up the Agri-Food Early Career Forum. If you are interested in finding out more, or want to get involved, please contact SCI's Committee Support on
