Scholarships 2015 - apply by 30 April

SCI 2014 Scholars

Each year, SCI offers opportunities for second year PhD students to apply for a Scholarship to assist with the cost of their study. An SCI Scholarship is worth not only £5000 split across two years, but also gives the recipients an opportunity to broaden their networks, their skills and their knowledge, via dedicated early career events and mentoring opportunities offered as part of the SCI Scholarship scheme and is a great asset to their CVs.

2015 Standing Committee Open Meetings

If you want to be involved in shaping the future of SCI, you can share your thoughts at the upcoming open Standing Committee meetings. The chairs and members of the Publications Advisory Committee (PAC) and Membership Affairs Committee (MAC) invite SCI members* to join their open meetings. The Standing Committees value the input of Society members at open meetings and welcome the opportunity to share their work with the wider membership and to encourage more participation.

2015 SCI Elections: Challenges for Candidates

Like other similar societies we face significant challenges in the next few years to recruit and, importantly, retain members; particularly active members. SCI Members are encouraged to put themselves forward for election as Trustees or Standing Committee Members to steer the long-term direction of the society and contribute their experience and ideas to shaping its future.

Prof Javier Pérez-Ramírez receives Beilby Medal

The 2014 Beilby Medal and Prize was presented to Prof Javier Pérez-Ramírez at a ceremony on 17 March at SCI, London, where attendees enjoyed Prof Pérez-Ramírez presentation on his outstanding work of exceptional practical relevance in the field of Catalysis Engineering. It was an excellent talk that generated many opportunities for questions and discussion.

Fracking is a hot topic which explains why one hundred attendees including current SCI Honorary President, Paul Booth, chairman of SABIC UK Petrochemicals, turned up to hear Professor Michael Stephenson discuss the facts and factoids surrounding shale gas and hydraulic fracturing at the Shale gas and fracking: the science behind the controversy event.

Given the number and nature of the vacancies this year the results are likely to help shape the Society for years to come. It is not healthy for SCI to have the election of those who will govern and influence it decided by only 7% of the membership.
