India and IRENA partner on energy transition

‘As a key global actor in the shift to renewable and a founding member of IRENA, India has played a major role in international energy cooperation.’

India’s Ministry of New and Renewable Energy has signed a strategic partnership agreement with the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA) to strengthen collaboration in the field of renewable energy. During 2021 India installed 13 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy, and has grown its capacity by more than 53 GW in the last five years, which IRENA says positions the country as one of the fastest growing renewable energy adopters in the world.

Under the partnership, IRENA will facilitate knowledge sharing on scaling-up renewable and clean energy technologies as well as supporting India’s efforts to advance ‘cost effective decarbonisation through the development of domestic green hydrogen.’ IRENA and India’s Government have said that they will work closely to ‘assess the potential role green hydrogen can play as both an enabler of the transition in India and as a new source of national energy exports.’ India has started the process for developing and launching a National Green Hydrogen Mission to enable cost competitive green hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and application of technologies. India has an aim to become a major producer of green hydrogen to support the decarbonisation of its industry.

Francesco La Camera, IRENA Director General commented; ‘As a key global actor in the shift to renewables, and a founding member of IRENA, India has played a major role in international energy cooperation.’

IRENA added that with innovation a ‘strong focus of the efforts,’ the partners are collaborating to host an innovation day in India which will offer an opportunity for countries to showcase successes and learn from each other’s experiences. Details of the event have yet to be made available.
