The World Economic Forum (WEF) has announced the latest cohort of 100 new start-ups to join its Technology Pioneers community. The WEF said that this year marks the first time that more than one-third of the selected firms are led by women, which the WEF said is well above the industry average. In addition, it was noted that Vietnam, Rwanda, and the Czech Republic are represented for the first time on the list of 30 countries.
The Technology Pioneers community comprises early-to growth-stage companies from around the world involved in the design, development and deployment of new technologies and innovations covering areas including healthcare, climate change, financial service and the metaverse. It is anticipated that that the companies will make a significant impact on business and society.
The 100 companies include Ampersand, from Rwanda, Africa’s leading battery-swap energy network for light vehicles; Mint Innovation, from New Zealand, delivering low-carbon metals critical to electrifying the global economy; Embion Technologies, from Switzerland, with a platform technology for sustainable nutrition and health solutions from biomass; and Novoloop, from the US, an upcycling company creating chemicals and materials made from plastic. The 2022 cohort of Technology Pioneers will be invited to participate in WEF workshops and events and high-level discussions during their two years in the community.
With a focus on new technologies to meet societal challenges and drive economic growth, the WEF launched the Technology Pioneers community in 2000. It is part of the Global Innovators community and part of the Centres for the Fourth Industrial Revolution Network, where members contribute to the shaping of new policies and strategies in areas such as artificial intelligence, blockchain and autonomous vehicles.
