A letter from SCI CEO, Sharon Todd, published in the Times, explains the importance of the UK government’s decision to approve the Jackdaw gas project. The issue of hydrocarbon production is about more than just energy security, Todd says:
“Policymakers must not equate transition to a low carbon economy with a complete end to hydrocarbon production. As well as being essential to energy security, hydrocarbons remain the building blocks for most everyday products, including medicines, clothes and electronics. If we do not produce hydrocarbons domestically, we simply import them from other countries in those everyday products. This means that the carbon footprint of those products is not under our control and in many cases is higher than if they were produced domestically.”
