Alan Baylis

Alan Baylis, current Chair of the Board of Trustees, has been a member of SCI for nearly 15 years, holding all officer positions in several Technical Interest Groups, including being Chair of Agrisciences Group for eight years. He has organised around 25 SCI conferences and has strongly promoted early career activities during his time as a member of SCI. He has served on the Membership Committee and has been a trustee since 2014, and Chair of the Board of Trustees since 2015.

During this time, SCI has made a great deal of progress, creating more impact while achieving a much more satisfactory financial position. Alan has worked with the Board and CEO to shape a more congruent and relevant SCI, based on a clear purpose and strategy, aiming to build a sustainable platform for the future. In his time as Chair of the Board of Trustees, Alan has focused on promoting a positive and progressive culture within a more effective system of governance, which in turn has allowed a more efficient and successful approach to SCI’s operations.

SCI’s prestigious Society Member Recognition Award, the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) is given to members of the Society who have contributed significant and sustained service to at least one element in the SCI structure for ten years or more. This year, SCI recognised Dr Pauline Allen and Dr Steve East with this honour.

Pauline Allen

Dr Pauline Allen studied chemistry at Oxford University, completing her post-doctoral research at UCLA and Oxford University in 1983.

Her 35-year career has included more than 20 years at the UK Atomic Energy Agency/AEA Technology at Harwell and Fulham, and both technical and financial project management of several multi-million-pound contracts.

Pauline has served as chair for SCI’s Electrochemical Technology Group since 2012, and as a member of the SCI Finance and Investments Advisory Committee since 2014, helping to ensure the financial stability of SCI, with the needs of members paramount.

Steve East

Dr Steve East is a highly valued member of the Fine Chemical’s Group and has been a committee member since 2001, serving six years as an Officer. He studied Chemistry at the University of Bristol and has a PhD in Organic Chemistry.

During his tenure as an Officer, his vision and influence in encouraging the Group to evolve, respond to changes in the sector, and innovate, has played a major role in ensuring the FCG's continued relevance to the fine chemicals community.

SCI would like to thank Alan, Pauline and Steve for their dedication and hard work, and congratulate them all on their thoroughly deserved awards.
