Lorenzo Ferrari (1968-2016)

17 May 2016

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lorenzo Ferrari, chair of SCI Canada.

Lorenzo Ferrari was most recently Manager, Business and Market Development for BASF Canada, where he had been since 2013. He had more than 20 years’ leadership experience working in the Canadian and global chemistry industry for companies such as Dow Chemical, Cooper Standard, Louisiana Pacific Corporation and Lanxess.

Lorenzo held Masters Degrees in both Chemistry and Business Administration from McMaster University, Canada. Through his career, he was granted eight patents.

Lorenzo was actively involved in the industry – he was past president of the Canadian Society for Chemistry (CSC) and past board member of the Chemical institute of Canada (CIC). He also served on the CIC-SCI Awards Selection Committee and the R&D Network Committee of the Chemistry Industry Association of Canada.

I met him at our recent SCI Canada/CIC event in Toronto. The event was a convention during the day which was attended by industry leaders and young scientists. He was full of energy and keen to understand more about SCI and how we could work together to progress SCI interests in Canada. With his industrial background he had a good understanding of the potential to develop the network and was keen to build up the connections with the young scientists who will form the future of our industry.

In the evening there was an awards ceremony which Lorenzo hosted, presenting the awards with a delicate balance of gravitas and humour. He passed away suddenly and we are very sad at this tragic news.

On behalf of all Members of SCI globally we wish to convey our condolences to his family and friends.

Sharon Todd
Executive Director
