Each year, at its AGM, SCI presents Distinguished Service Awards. The awards celebrate the hard work and goodwill of longer-serving members from all component parts of the Society. They recognise time given as volunteers to organise conferences, edit or peer-review the material published in our journals, share enthusiasm, or lend leadership and vision to sustain regional or technical group activities.
This year, the Society is pleased to present a Distinguished Service Award to Mr Tim White for his work with the Environment, Health and Safety Group.
How did you become a member of SCI?
I joined in the late 70s after finding a copy of Chemistry & Industry in a library.
Why did you decide to get involved in committee work/organising events/collaborating in SCI publications?
SCI was, and still is an organisation whose goals I identify with. I am passionate about the recognition of good science and how its application can bring about commercial and social benefits. Most of all about the ability of the application of science to deliver a common sense approach to disputes and highlight real issues which, on the whole, can be resolved.
What has driven your long-term involvement?
The work can never be completed because there is always advancement of technology and the misunderstanding of what is achievable, combined with inappropriate expectations of the public at large.
Has being involved in SCI activities had an impact on your professional career?
Without doubt, my involvement in SCI has enabled me to develop a wider understanding of other areas of chemical technology than I would have been exposed to if I had not been an active member of the Society.
Do your SCI activities reflect your personal/professional interests?
Yes
Are you still excited to participate in SCI activities?
I would not use the word excited, but I am enthusiastic about the perpetuation of the Society’s activity and the ability it has to spread awareness/knowledge in a non-partisan way.
How do you think that your contribution has helped shape SCI?
I have never really thought about this question before. I have never had an objective of shaping SCI from a personal perspective. However, I would like to think that I have encouraged people to:
- Join SCI
- Read Chemistry and Industry
- Maintain their membership
- Increase their own participation in the Society’s activities to expand professional lives.
Are you excited about receiving a Distinguished Service Award?
I am surprised and feel honoured to receive the award!
