SCI Scholar, Samuel Miller, Presents his End of Year Report

For over thirty years, SCI has supported and recognised the excellence of early career people, by aiding their studies in the form of an SCI Scholarship.

Since 1985, over 68 scholarships have been awarded which have not only given the recipients financial assistance, but have enabled them to broaden their network as well as strengthen their skills and knowledge. SCI Scholars receive access to publishing and mentoring opportunities and are given a platform to present their work amongst esteemed scientists and industrialists, thus raising their profile within the scientific community. In the past eight years alone, SCI has generously bequeathed over £115,000 of its charitable funds to SCI Scholars and the scientists of the future.

Samuel Miller was awarded an SCI Scholarship in 2015. At the end of their first year, SCI Scholars present an end of year report to SCI. Read on to find out more about what Samuel has done in his first year as an SCI Scholar.

‘Since receiving my scholarship last year, I have continued my work on greener photochemical processes, as well as moving into the development of continuous NMR reaction monitoring techniques. My association with SCI through my Messel Scholarship has supported this and allowed me several enriching opportunities throughout the year.

‘In December I was fortunate to be invited to the College of Scholars‘ Day at SCI Headquarters, run by the Early Careers Committee (ECC). This was a fun and interesting day during which I participated in networking and workshops with other young researchers, and witnessed several talks from ECC members, including Professor Joe Sweeney who gave insight into how academic research can be made more relevant to Industrial application, a particular interest of mine.

‘In addition, I attended the 3rd SCI/RSC Continuous Flows Technology conference in March. As well as the high quality of the talks and posters, it was very interesting to see the differing yet complimentary perspectives of researchers from different backgrounds. Something that always strikes me about SCI conferences is the high proportion of industry representatives in attendance.

‘For me, the next year will be dominated by writing - both journal articles and my PhD thesis - and I am grateful that the financial award that came with this Scholarship will allow me to fund this part of my studies. I hope to have the opportunity to participate in more SCI events like the College of Scholars‘ Day, and to attend more of the SCI‘s symposia and conferences. In particular I look forward to the 2017 AGM in which, I have been told, I have the opportunity to present.

‘As I move into the second year of my scholarship I am beginning to consider my next steps. I intend to continue in academic research along a similar vein, and to know that there is a support network available in the ECC and Early Career Group is very encouraging. The field of Green Chemistry, just like SCI, is positioned where science meets business and I look forward to working as part of this organisation in the future.’
