Paul Nathanail receives Environment Medal

12 February 2020

SCI’s Environment, Health and Safety Group was delighted to award Professor Paul Nathanail with the SCI Environment Medal at an event held in his honour at SCI HQ on 12 December 2019.

Paul is Managing Director of Land Quality Management Ltd and serves on the Brownfield Land Forum, the SILC Professional and Technical Panel, the Geological Society Contaminated Land Specialist Group committee, and BSI’s committee EH4 on Soil Quality. Paul was Professor of Engineering Geology at Nottingham University from 1998 to 2018.

His lecture, Reflections on Eastbourne 1979: Firm Foundations for Future Land Contamination Risk Management, marked the 40th anniversary of the UK’s first conference on contaminated land, held by SCI in 1979.

The medal is awarded occasionally rather than annually. There is no standard citation but an important element has been not only application of science to environmental matters but willingness to engage and communicate. Paul is held in the highest regard by those involved in land quality management for the sterling contributions he has made to science, technology and philosophy of the field.

Among his many contributions have been innovative MSc and MRes courses, resulting in numerous cohorts of well tutored people working as regulators and in industry. And then there are the suitable for use levels (S4ULs) and numerous innovative approaches to data and site assessment, and to training and education by LQM. He initiated and brought to fruition the International Standard ISO 18504 on sustainable remediation.

‘The contaminated land community owes a lot to Paul. We wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are now without his multifarious contributions,’ said group committee member Mike Smith.
