Synopsis

The Horticulture group will be holding their Annual General meeting at 11:00 am and all members are invited. The AGM documents will be available to download from the secure member's area (you will need to sign in to view). For more information or if you only wish to attend the Group AGM, please get in touch with Foster.alison.c@gmail.com

The visit, arranged for after the AGM has taken place, is a rare opportunity for a visit to the Cambridge University Herbarium (CGE), which is part of the Department of Plant Sciences.

With specimens dating from at least 1703, CGE houses a hugely important collection of over 1.1 million pressed, dried and mounted plants. Specimens from around the world have been added to the collection as a result of purchases, gifts, exchanges and benefactions. The British collection is one of the finest and most new specimens added to CGE are incorporated into this collection.

CGE is particularly rich in historic collections, particularly from the 19th century, including the vast majority of the plant specimens gathered by Charles Darwin on the voyage of HMS Beagle, and the herbarium of John Lindley and the Horticultural Society of London (later the Royal Horticultural Society) which contains many thousands of type specimens which were new to Western science at the time, from the Americas, Asia and Australia.

This is a visit, particularly aimed at those wishing to see the collection and discuss opportunities for collaborative research.
