Message from the Chair

Ravi Ramachandran

The challenges facing the world today are ever growing and complex, requiring innovative new solutions to enable society to grow and adapt to these challenges. As a fundamental scientific discipline, innovation in the chemical sciences offers solutions to many of these problems. These innovations range from new life saving drugs, to energy and agricultural advances that are enabling society to respond to the climate change crisis. The Canadian chemical industry is instrumental in bringing these innovations to the market. Chemistry plays a fundamental role in the lives of Canadians, from the specialty chemicals used daily in cosmetic products to advanced materials that underpin many modern conveniences. The chemical industry also plays a large role in Canada’s economic prosperity, contributing $73 billion to the economy and employing more than 90,000 Canadians and supporting an additional 454,000 jobs in Canada.

SCI Canada was established in 1902, and since its inception has been dedicated to recognizing outstanding leaders and champions of innovation in the Canadian Chemical Industry. The SCI Canada Awards Nomination Committee is dedicated to continuing the strong tradition of recognizing innovation and the exceptional achievements and successes of the dedicated chemists, chemical engineers, entrepreneurs and business leaders that contribute to the continued growth and innovation of the Canadian chemical industry. As Chair of the Nomination Committee, my colleagues and I are honoured to participate in shaping the SCI awards programme.
