Investment designed to open up commercial opportunities.

Taking steps to decarbonise road transport, the UK Government has committed £12 million in funding for research and development to support a series of competitions for some of the most promising Electric Vehicle (EV) technologies.

Together with Innovate UK, the funding will support a range of ‘ground breaking’ projects which are designed to open up significant commercial opportunities, one of which could see batteries become fully charged in six minutes.

The Government announcement was made on the first World EV Day, which took place on 9 September. The day has been designated as an opportunity to shift the transition to sustainable transport with consumer, business and policy outcomes.

Commenting on the investment, Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said ‘… With our continued support for R&D [we] will see talented UK-based SMEs flourish as well as more than 6000 skilled jobs created up and down the country. This is why on the first day dedicated to celebrating electric vehicles, I am delighted to announce our unwavering support for a cleaner, greener, transport future.’
