Leading energy companies are collaborating across separate projects to increase the rate of global decarbonisation
TotalEnergies and Adani Enterprises Limited are to create a new platform for the production and commercialisation of green hydrogen in India. The new company, Adani New Industries Limited (ANIL) will see the partners producing one million tonne per year of green hydrogen by 2030, which will be underpinned by approximately 30 gigawatts of renewable power generation. ANIL will also be integrated along its value chain, from producing the equipment needed to generate renewable power to the production of the green hydrogen and the transformation into derivative products which includes fertilisers and methanol for the domestic market and export.

TotalEnergies, which holds a 25% stake in ANIL, has said that the formation of the company ‘is a major milestone in implementing our low carbon hydrogen strategy’. Adani Group Chairman Gautam Adani added: ‘Our confidence in our ability to produce the world’s least expensive electron is what will drive our ability to produce the world’s least expensive green hydrogen. This partnership will open up a number of exciting downstream pathways.’ ANIL is seeking to invest more than $5 billion over the next 10 years in green hydrogen and associated projects.
Meanwhile, a project located in the Pilbara region of Western Australia has the potential to become one of the largest renewable and green hydrogen hubs in the world. The Asian Renewable Energy Hub (AREH) will see BP take a 40.5% stake and become operator of the project. The hub is intended to supply renewable power to local customers along with green hydrogen and green ammonia for the Australian market and export to international users. At full capacity, AREH will produce around 1.6 million tonnes of green hydrogen or nine million tonnes of green ammonia each year.
The project is being developed in collaboration with InterContinental Energy, CWP Global, Macquarie Capital and Maquarie’s Green Investment Group, as well as the Nyangumarta people; Aboriginal Australians. The project was first proposed in 2014.

Anja-Isabel Dotzenrath, BP’s executive vice president of gas and low-carbon energy said: ‘We believe AREH can be a cornerstone project for us in helping our local and global customers and partners in meeting their net-zero and energy commitments. It will also serve as a long-term clean energy security contributor in Asia Pacific, helping countries such as South Korea and Japan to decarbonise.
The development of green hydrogen projects is continuing to grow at pace. During 2021 Shell began producing green hydrogen at its facility in Germany, during that year Ineos said that it would invest €2 billion in green hydrogen projects in Europe and BP said that it was planning large scale production in the UK.
