This is the third in a series of SCItalks looking at the role of advocacy in accelerating the transition to more sustainable chemicals.

Rupert Posner is Global Director Sustainability Advocacy for Unilever’s Home Care, based in London, UK. He is a climate change and sustainability leader with corporate affairs and strategic communications expertise, experienced in government, large corporate and not-for-profit sectors. Over the years he has worked with senior business and government leaders around the world to develop and deliver impactful policy initiatives and thought leadership programmes.

As the key to removing dirt and stains, chemicals are critical to the superior cleaning performance of Unilever’s Home Care products, but they also represent most of its greenhouse gas footprint.

Lowering the emissions linked to the chemicals it buys is a key part of its Climate Transition Action Plan and is vital for progressing towards its Net Zero by 2039 ambition.

Unilever is working with a broad range of stakeholders – including policymakers, NGOs, industry, academics, and trade associations – to drive a faster transition.

This SCItalk forms part of a series of talks on sustainability. The first talk in this series was given Michael Carus, founder of the Nova Institute which seeks to support companies on the smart transition to renewable carbon. His talk looked at building a renewable carbon economy.

The second SCItalk in the series looks into the concept of the life cycle assessment frameworks from the goal and scope, through to data collection and the methodologies used and was given by Rachael Rothman, Professor of Sustainable Chemical Engineering at the University of Sheffield.
