Marlies Ilott is a 2025 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
Marlies Ilott is a class of 2025 graduate from the Chemical Engineering Programme at Lakehead University in Thunder Bay, Ontario. She completed her degree with the highest academic standing in a Bachelor degree programme, earning both the Governor General’s Silver Academic Medal and the President’s Award for the Faculty of Engineering.
Throughout university, Marlies was highly involved with the Engineering Student Society, serving multiple director terms and two executive terms as Vice President Social and President. In these roles, she advocated for engineering students and helped provide them with events, academic supports, and professional development opportunities.
For her final degree project, Marlies focused on the gasification of municipal solid waste with carbon capture integration for hydrogen production. This work explored an innovative approach to reducing landfill waste in Canada while producing a valuable energy resource. Her responsibilities included process design and simulation, P&ID generation, and a comprehensive economic analysis of the plant.
Her industry experience spans two four-month internships with Thunder Bay Pulp and Paper, where she worked in both the Fiber Line and Utilities departments. There, she collaborated with engineers to optimise the pulping process and chemical recovery cycle.
Marlies has a strong commitment to sustainability and plans to pursue her P.Eng. license, aiming to contribute to innovation in the chemical industry through advancements in process design, industrial efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
