London Canal Museum Visit

9 Apr 2014

The London Group is organising a visit to the London Canal Museum for SCI members and their guests on Saturday 21 June for only £11 a head.

The visit will start at 11am at the museum, housed in a former ice warehouse, with an introductory talk given by a member of staff, and then attendees will be able to explore the museum at their leisure. At 1pm attendees will retire to a nearby Italian restaurant, Pasta House, for a leisurely two course meal and a drink that will be included in the price before returning to the museum for a guided hour long walk along the tow path to Camden. The day ends in Camden at about 4:30 pm.

To avoid disappointment please book well in advance, as places are limited to 25.

The London Canal Museum, the only London museum of inland waterways, is conveniently situated in a central location close to King's Cross and is fully accessible to all visitors. The museum covers the history of the canals, how they came to be built, the lives of the workers, the cargoes, horses and how canals work; and also tells the story of the ice industry in London.

Visitors can see inside a narrowboat cabin and peer down into a huge Victorian ice well used to store ice brought from Norway. The museum itself is housed in a former ice warehouse built in about 1862-3 for Carlo Gatti, the famous ice cream maker, and so visitors can also learn about the history of ice cream and how it was linked to the ice trade.

Pasta House is a well regarded local Italian restaurant and the meal will be two course including vegetarian, fish and meat options and glass of wine, beer or soft drink. Further drinks and service are not included and will be at your own discretion.

The day will end with an hour-long guided walk along the tow path, starting at the museum and ending in Camden. This will be a chance to burn off those calories and learn more about the canal.

The guided walk to Camden and the introductory talk at the museum are only available to groups and so the London Committee expects that there will be high demand for this limited opportunity. We hope to see you there!

  • Pasta House is located at 368 Gray's Inn Rd, London WC1X 8BB.
