Norman Blakeborough 1923 – 2014

3 Dec 2014

We regret to inform you of the sad passing of Norman Blakeborough, former SCI member and Lampitt medallist.

Norman was born in Manchester and spent his early education at Manchester Tech (now UMIST) where he graduated in Chemical Engineering before taking his first post at Glaxo. He returned back to academia at Birmingham University where he amassed a great number of friends. He then moved to Delhi in 1967, as Head of the Biotechnology and Engineering department, and Professor of the Institute of Technology, returning to Birmingham as a Professor. From there he moved to Reading and finally, for six years to The University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur as Professor.

Norman was awarded his Lampitt medal in 1998 and was a member of the Liverpool and North West and Process Engineering Groups. He also worked with the Food Group and the Publications Advisory Committee, and was involved with the editorial board of SCI’s Journal of the Science of Food and Agriculture (JSFA).

Norman was a well known and well liked character of the Society and his contributions across many areas of SCI work were greatly appreciated. He will be remembered fondly by his many friends and colleagues at SCI as a very deserving winner of the Lampitt medal, and as very valued committee member.
