2011 was a great year for our conferencing activity despite the difficult and highly competitive market. Conferences are an important charitable mechanism as one of the key platforms for SCI to encourage knowledge sharing and networking.
In 2011, SCI ran 35 conferences generating exceptionally good attendances which resulted in a better-than-planned outturn for the year. This was one of our best achievements for many years and is particularly commendable given that we had a larger -than-normal number of cancelled events.
Additionally, SCI hosted a series of six high quality public lectures in Belgrave Square branded as a celebration of the International Year of Chemistry which attracted good audiences. These included The Challenge of Climate Change: Energy Policy and Global Warming; The Redemption of the British Breakfast; Nonwoven Fabrics in Healthcare and Medical Devices; When the lights go out will we care about carbon emissions? and The Thames Tideway Debate.
Many other successful public lectures were also staged around the UK by regional groups. Overall, SCI's technical and regional groups between them organised close to 100 meetings, connecting members and reaching out to new audiences.
The Board and the Executive would like to congratulate our Groups for all the hard work that went in to achieving this fantastic result. Well done to all involved!
