The Young Chemist in Industry symposium, held on Tuesday, 28 April 2009, is an annual, one-day meeting, representing a unique opportunity for younger chemists, (typically those under 30, or those having worked in the chemical industry for less than five years, but not holding a PhD), to showcase their industrial research to an external audience. It also incorporates a competitive element, with prizes awarded for the best talk and to two runners-up, as judged by the organising committee. In addition to the participants’ lectures, a lecture from an experienced, high profile industrial figure is included to conclude the proceedings. This year, Steve Jordan (Biotage) presented the closing lecture.
In previous years, the main focus for the lectures has been on synthetic organic chemistry, but recently, other topics including cheminformatics, polymer chemistry, analytical chemistry, flow chemistry and new methodologies have emerged as current topics of research.
This meetings are of particular interest to industrial chemists who can discover what their contemporaries do in other branches of the industry, and through offering a window into other areas of research.
