The award celebrates his achievements for business and the wider community. He first served as SCI President from 2012 – 2015 and has been in his current SCI President term since 2019.

Having worked in the chemical industry for over 40 years, Paul had earlier received an OBE in recognition for his services to the sector in 2013.

“I am delighted and humbled to receive this award for services to business and the community,” said Paul. “It has been a pleasure and an honour to work with fantastic colleagues in the South Tees Development Corporation, the Tees Valley Combined Authority and SCI over recent years. I also want to recognise the many people who have worked hard as a team to deliver successes across these organisations.”

Born in Teesside, Paul started his career with ICI and later became Chairman of SABIC UK Petrochemicals. He was also a member of the CIA (Chemical Industries Association) Council and Chairman of the North East Process Industry Cluster. Paul sits on the Chemistry Council, a government industry partnership, and he served as Chair of the Tees Valley Combined Local Enterprise Partnership from 2015 to 2021, where he championed regional development through innovative technology.

Paul has had a long and passionate interest in training and development, supporting the many SCI programmes designed to develop young scientists and engineers into the entrepreneurs and industry leaders of the future. He sits on the board of governors for Teesside University and was previously a member of Redcar and Cleveland Technical College, National Skills Academy and the TTE Technical Institute Training School.

“Paul’s deep interest in sustainability and his promotion of innovative technologies, which will deliver sustainability to industry and society deserve recognition of this kind.
