Message from the Chair
The consumer products supply chain has a key role to play in eliminating its use of virgin fossil fuels. Our sector must take a collaborative approach to innovate and implement sustainable solutions in order to reduce our impact on the global environment and climate.
Sustainable Materials for Consumer Products first span-out as a project from the Chemistry Council Innovation Committee, which forms part of the joint government/industry sector council for chemistry-using business in the UK.
I attended the first SMCP event in November 2020, which marked the foundation of the group – this was well-attended by a range of representatives including raw materials producers, formulators, retailers, and supporting organisations. Since the formal launch of the SCI committee in 2021, we continue to build our membership, seeking relevant expertise from across industry, academia, and regulatory organisations.

The SMCP group aims to engage with stakeholders across the consumer products supply chain.
The group’s focus is to support identification and communication of high-priority challenges and innovations for the industry, which may apply to alternative feedstocks, process technologies, or life cycle methodologies.
By providing a forum for cross-sector and industry-government engagement, the SMCP group plays a role in enabling sustainable solutions to be implemented more effectively.
