Early Career Award 2025: Natasha Boulding

3 July 2025

Launching in 2025, the Early Career award offers the opportunity to recognise the contributions of our early career members' enthusiasm, dedication, and service during their membership with SCI.

This year's winner is Natasha Boulding for her exceptional service in supporting SCI to achieve its charitable objectives and her dedication to SCI's early careers programme, most notably her continued support of the Bright SCIdea challenge.

Read Natasha's interview below:

When and why did you become a member of SCI?

I became a member of SCI during my early career (as a PhD student!) to connect with leading professionals and stay up to date with the latest scientific advancements in my field. It offered a vital platform for networking and continuous learning beyond my immediate work environment.

What has driven your continued involvement with SCI?

My continued involvement with SCI is driven by the invaluable community and collaborative spirit, which consistently offers new perspectives and opportunities.

How has being involved in SCI activities had an impact on your professional career?

Being involved in SCI activities has significantly broadened my professional network. From taking part and winning Bright SCIdea in 2019, attending COP26 with the SCI team, through to very recently being invited to the North East Regional Select Committee. I love connecting with people across diverse disciplines and learning new things.

How do your SCI activities reflect your personal/professional interests?

My SCI activities perfectly align with my personal passion for scientific discovery and my professional interest in translating research into real-world solutions. Engaging with various SCI initiatives (from Bright SCIdea, conferences and committees) allows me to explore cutting-edge topics and advocate for sustainable innovation - something I care very deeply about.

What advice would you give to Early career individuals joining the society?

I would advise early career individuals to be proactive in attending events and connecting with members - there's something for everyone. Most of all… remain curious!

How do you think that your contribution has helped shape SCI?

I hope my contribution has helped shape SCI by bringing a multidisciplinary and early stage perspective and a strong focus on practical, impactful applications of science. I also hope to continue to support talented young professionals and entrepreneurs.

What are your thoughts about receiving an Early Career Award?

SCI is an organisation that means a lot to me personally, so receiving an Early Career Award is an incredible honour that I truly cherish, as it validates the hard work and dedication I've poured into my work. It serves as a powerful encouragement to continue pushing the boundaries of innovation and contributing to the scientific community.
