Rideal Travel Bursary recipient, Naval Singh, reports from Slovenia

05 November 2018

Naval Singh was awarded a Rideal Travel Bursary to attend the European Colloid and Interface Society Conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. Here, he tells us about the opportunity to present his research work and how he was awarded the “Elsevier Prize” for best poster presentation.

‘I would like to thank the SCI-RSC Rideal Trust for granting me the prestigious Rideal travel bursary which enabled me to attend the European Colloid and Interface Society (ECIS) conference in Ljubljana, Slovenia. I was awarded the “Elsevier Prize” for the best poster presentation at the conference. I feel immensely privileged and honoured for the recognition I have received for my work at the European Colloid and Interface Society Conference. I wish to express my sincere gratitude to my supervisors for their support.

‘The ECIS conference is one of the major events in the field of colloid and interfacial science and was attended by eminent scientists from all over the world. Attending this conference was a great opportunity for me to present my research work on colloidal particle manipulation by diffusiophoresis in microfluidic devices. My research was much aligned with a number of conference topics and enormously helped me to network with the community worldwide. I was able to get feedback for my research work and many faculty members seem interested in the work and advised me on exploiting several great potentials for application. The state-of-the-art research talks were delivered by participants from academia as well as the industry which gave me an opportunity to extend my knowledge in various other fields of colloidal science.

‘Other than talks, the social events were very well organised. Lake Bled (situated in the Julian Alps in northwestern Slovenia) and Postojna Cave (situated in southwestern Slovenia) are the popular tourist sites. I was awestruck by the lake’s beauty and the medieval Bled castle overlooking Lake Bled. Visiting Postojna cave, one of the best-known caves in the world, offered an unparalleled experience of the underground world.

‘In a nutshell, attending the ECIS conference was a remarkable experience and will contribute significantly to my professional development.’
