Alyssa Harrison is a 2025 Canada Student Merit Award winner. She achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of her class in the fourth and final year of her degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
"Hi everyone! My name is Alyssa Harrison and I am a chemistry student at the University of Windsor. I have recently graduated with an undergraduate degree in Honours Chemistry and will be starting my masters degree in chemistry in September at the University of Windsor as well.
"My research is in the field of Materials Chemistry and focuses specifically on wearable electronics, electronic textiles, and pressure sensors. I completed my fourth year thesis research project this past year where I created a textile based capacitive pressure sensor using velour fabric and conductive organic materials. After defending this research, I was awarded an honourable mention for the Mutus Materials Chemistry Award at the University of Windsor.
"This past summer, I was also awarded the NSERC Undergraduate Student Research Award (USRA) under the supervision of my supervisor Dr Tricia Carmichael. This experience has allowed me to work in the lab all summer and continue to expand my knowledge on my research and expand my project. I have also received an Ontario Graduate Scholarship (OGS) to support my masters journey in the fall. Finally, I had the incredible opportunity of attending the 2025 Canadian Chemistry Conference and Exhibition this year in Ottawa. Here, I was able to present a research talk at the very first Emerging Scholars Undergraduate Research Symposium.
"This was truly an incredible experience where I was able to watch talks from researchers all over Canada and I was very inspired by the work I saw at this conference. I'm excited to continue my journey in chemistry this fall."
