Canada Student Merit Award Recipient, Gabriel Oliver

27 August 2025

Gabriel Oliver is a 2025 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Gabriel Oliver, Canada Student Merit Award winner 2025Gabriel Oliver is completing a Specialist in Medicinal and Biological Chemistry and a Major in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology at the University of Toronto Scarborough. His academic and research experiences span organic, analytical, and bio-organic chemistry, reflecting his interest in applying chemical sciences to both biomedical and environmental challenges.

Under the supervision of Professor Mikhaylichenko, Gabriel has focused on advanced organic and analytical chemistry research, including the synthesis and characterisation of triazine-based covalent organic frameworks and the asymmetric synthesis of antifungal molecules. His projects explore applications in antimicrobial activity, catalysis, and functional materials, combining synthetic methodology with spectroscopic and chromatographic characterisation. These studies have developed his expertise in techniques such as NMR, FTIR, UV-Vis spectroscopy, ion chromatography, and mass spectrometry.

In the Kerman Laboratory, Gabriel worked on the development of covalent organic frameworks for the detection of guanine and its derivatives, highlighting the interface of organic chemistry, materials design, and biochemical analysis. He has also collaborated with Professor Cadotte on ecological phytochemistry research, investigating the impact of urbanisation on terpene metabolism and biochemical responses in tree leaves, linking environmental stress gradients to chemical composition.

Beyond research, Gabriel has contributed extensively to teaching as a chemistry teaching assistant for multiple courses, including organic, bio-organic, and advanced laboratory classes. In these roles, he has supported student learning in both theoretical concepts and practical techniques, reinforcing his commitment to mentorship in science education. Gabriel plans to pursue graduate studies in organic chemistry, focusing on synthetic and medicinal chemistry. His long-term goal is to advance innovative chemical solutions that address biomedical and environmental needs.
