George Doerksen is a 2025 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.
George Doerksen studied Chemistry at the University of Calgary from 2021-2025. In Summer 2024 he was a recipient of the Mitacs Globalink Research Award and travelled to the University of Helsinki to participate in computational chemistry research for Dr Petra Vasko.
His work there covered topics including the activation of hydrogen using intramolecular frustrated Lewis pairs, as well as the use of new metal-free catalyst for alkene hydroboration. On his return, he spent his last year of study working in the laboratory of Dr Gabriel Ménard, researching the thiol-ene reaction for attaching functionalised carboranes to other molecules.
In 2025, George graduated, receiving a B.Sc. Honours in Chemistry, First Class. He was also the recipient of the Department of Chemistry Silver Medallion.
