SCI Awards - Canada Student Merit Award recipient - Konrad SamselKonrad Samsel is a 2020 Canada Student Merit Award winner. He achieved this award for obtaining the highest standing of his class in the fourth and final year of his degree. Here is a brief biography of the winner.

Konrad Samsel studied Immunology and Nutritional Sciences at The University of Toronto, Victoria College. During his time as an undergraduate student, he was given the opportunity to conduct research at Mount Sinai Hospital’s Division of Urology and the UofT Department of Nutritional Sciences, where he studied the influence of CYP1A2 polymorphisms and dietary caffeine intake on biomarkers of male fertility. He has also been involved with the Faculty of Engineering as a Summer Fellow at the UofT Hatchery, and as a Biodesign capstone student at the Institute of Biomedical Engineering. He is passionate about educating the next generation of scientific leaders and was a Laboratory Instructor at the Temerty Faculty of Medicine in 2019 where he taught topics in physiology, molecular genetics, pharmacology, and microbiology. Building on his drive to explore, educate and innovate, he plans to focus his future research in the area of molecular genetics and microbiology and hopes to continue mentoring and teaching. 

Outside of the classroom, he enjoys swimming, playing tennis, and rallying in squash. Additionally, he enjoys keeping up to date on topics related to digital health, health services research, nutrition, and microbiology.

He is honored to be a recipient of the 2020 SCI Canada Student Merit Award.
