Focus on Frontiers in Industrial Biotechnology – submit an abstract

1 Oct 2014

SCI's Biotechnology Group are delighted to welcome the European Federation of Biotechnology and BBSRC to SCI, Belgrave Square, London, to bring you a meeting on the science and engineering aspects of industrial biotechnology. Focus on Frontiers in Industrial Biotechnology will encompass all areas of Industrial Biotechnology and Bioprocessing, from proteins to small molecules, biopharmaceuticals to platform chemicals and biofuels.

The meeting will reinforce the links between processes generating diverse products and encourage collaborative links to be built throughout Europe for joint research and applications to trans-European funding schemes such as Horizon 2020.

Starting at 2 pm on Monday 17 November, the meeting opens with a plenary lecture entitled: Personalized Medicine - Deciphering cancer by Professor Carl Borrebaeck, Department of Immunotechnology, Lund University.

The conference will in part be sponsored by the UK BBSRC and will include contributions from Chairs of recently established networks of biotechnology within the UK:

  • Stuart Stocks, Novozymes A/S, Bagsvaerd, Denmark. Industrial scale protein production.
  • Dimitris Charalampopoulos (Reading). FoodWasteNet: Food processing waste and by-products utilisation network;
  • Simon McQueen Mason (York). LBNet: Lignocellulosic biorefinery network;
  • David Leak (Bath). P2P: A Network of Integrated Technologies: Plants to Products;
  • C. J. Banks (Southampton). ADNet: Anaerobic Digestion Network;
  • Saul Purton, (UC London). PHYCONET: unlocking the IB potential of microalgae.
  • Nigel Robinson (Durham ). Metals in Biology: the elements of biotechnology and bioenergy.

There will also be a Workshop: Systems and synthetic biology for open discussion and contributions from the floor. The theme: What Industry requires from academia – and what academia requires from Industry.

Submit an abstract
Scientists from academia and industry are invited to submit abstracts for oral and poster presentations describing original research in any of the conference scientific topics:

  • Biofuels
  • Fine and speciality chemicals
  • Commodity and platform chemicals
  • Recombinant and native protein production
  • Integrative biorefining
  • Bioremediation and Environmental IB
  • Technology development in downstream processing
  • Process design and modelling

The scientific committee will select the type of contribution (oral or posters) based on the review of abstracts.

Abstracts should be submitted by 24 October 2014.

Please note: Abstract presenters must first register to attend the conference by following the instructions for registration.  Following registration, you will receive a link and instructions on how to submit your abstract.  No abstract will be considered until the meeting registration fee has been paid.  SCI members qualify for a discounted registration fee – see event website for more details.
